At èßäAV, our AmeriCorps members are the heart and soul of our program and come from diverse backgrounds and lifepaths to support students K-4 in becoming lifelong readers!

Basic requirements to serve

Must possess a high school diploma or GED at the start of your service

Hold US Citizenship, Permanent Resident or National status, (We cannot accept applications from international students on OPT/CPT visas, nor can we accept applications from DACA recipients)

Program coordinator

Leads the day-to-day operations of a èßäAV reading center at a partner site.

Locations: Accepting applicants in all regions.

Regional program coordinator

Serves as a mobile coordinator to support multiple reading centers, supporting the implementation of our traditional and distance tutoring programs (or a hybrid of both).

Locations: Colorado, Los Angeles, and San Francisco Bay Area.

Literacy lead

Provides direct tutoring to students including in-person and online programs, focusing on target students who can benefit from more individualized instruction.

Locations: Baltimore, Colorado, Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area, South Carolina, Tulsa, Washington, DC.

Volunteer coordinator

Leads recruitment and onboarding of volunteer tutors, and implements community engagement initiatives in the region.

Locations: Baltimore, Colorado, Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, San Francisco Bay Area, South Carolina, Tulsa, Twin Cities.

Benefits

AmeriCorps members earn a modest living allowance during their service rather than a salary or hourly wage.

Members who serve receive medical, dental, and vision at no monthly cost.
Note: part-time service members do not qualify.

Segal Education Award
As a member of the federal AmeriCorps program, you are eligible to earn the Segal Education Award at the completion of your service term, which can go toward:

  • Paying future education costs/tuition
  • Paying off existing qualified student loans
  • Eligible educational travel

This award varies for 1700-hour, 1200-hour, and 900-hour roles. 

Over 55 at time of service? You can transfer your award to a child, stepchild, grandchild, step-grandchild.

Serving 1700 hours in California? You may qualify for the “California for All” award, which would supplement your Segal Education Award, bringing the total amount to $10,000

Schools of national service

AmeriCorps members qualify for student loan forbearance during service. Additionally, current members and alumni have access to the , including 300+ colleges and universities that provide one or more of the following benefits to students who complete a year of service:

  • Tuition matching for the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award
  • Exclusive scholarships or fellowships
  • Priority points for admission consideration 
  • In-state tuition 
  • Expenses like books and supplies, room and board, or other personal costs like transportation 
  • One-year enrollment deferrals 
  • Academic credit

Service members receive ongoing professional development and career-advancing opportunities, including access to community partners and AmeriCorps networks, CPR certification, continued learning opportunities, mentorship, and more.
